Avon’s Shaylynn Davidson didn’t let a rough start to her day discourage her from what she does best.

Trailing, 33-27, midway through the fourth quarter on Dec. 10, Avon Lake overcame some offensive woes to tie Avon, 33-33. But Davidson hit her first basket of the game with 41 seconds left to give Avon its first Southwestern Conference win, 36-33.

Avon coach Meghan Larrick saw her team in familiar territory late in the game and needed to see the Eagles grow from their last game.

“We’ve had a tough start to the season, (I) know the girls are disappointed with a 1-3 start, but they’ve never given up. They’ve continued to persevere through the adversity that we’ve faced and they’ve continued to fight each day in practice,” Larrick said. “Our goal this year has been growth. We say it’s not going to be perfection. But it’s going to be growth throughout the season and today we did some things, we improved on some things so I’m proud of these girls for continuing to fight.
