Avon fell just short of its goal of winning the Southwestern Conference last season (finishing second). So naturally the Eagles were eager to get a crack at defending champion North Olmsted in an early season conference showdown on Dec. 13.
After a sluggish start in the first quarter, Avon (3-0, 2-0 SWC) knocked down 12 3-pointers and snagged 12 offensive rebounds en route to an 82-52 road victory.
Avon coach Kevin Sapara was pleased with the conference victory on the road but knows the season is long.
“It’s a new year and we are just taking this journey one game at a time,” Sapara said. “We think that every team that we play in the league is a good team but we don’t look past anybody, especially when you are on the road and I thought our kids did that and they were excited to play.”
