HIGH SCHOOL SWIMMING: AVON GIRLS CLAIM SCHOOL’S FIRST CONFERENCE TITLE

It was a great day to be an Eagle.

The Avon girls team won the first conference title in program history — for either gender — and the boys team placed second behind a two-win performance from Ben Brooks at the 36th annual Southwestern Conference Championships on Jan. 28 at the Westlake Recreation Center.

While the Avon Lake Shoregals won the conference meet handily, 304-238, in front of second-place Avon, it was the No. 2 that proved to be the biggest digit this season.

Since the SWC meet accounts for only half of the point total to determine the champion, Avon did not have to rely on winning the meet to win the title and dethrone the defending champion Shoregals — thanks to a two-point, 94-92 win over Avon Lake on Nov. 28.
