Maybe it is a sign from the swimming gods.
A year after becoming the first Lorain County swimmer to make podium at state in the 200 IM since Avon Lake’s Brad Bartel took second in 1999-2000 via his sixth-place finish, Avon senior Ben Brooks kicked off his road to Canton by breaking Bartel’s 200 IM record at the Division I Lakewood Sectional meet on Feb. 11 at Cleveland State’s Busby Natatorium.
Brooks posted a time of 1:54.14, besting Bartel’s record of 1:54.42 set in 1998.
It was the first of two wins — and two sectional meet records — for Brooks on the afternoon. The senior posted a 56.88 in the 100 breaststroke to claim the sectional title and break St. Ignatius’ Derek Hren’s 2013 mark of 57.91.
“There was a lot of great things about today,” Brooks said. “In my IM, I felt smooth, I felt long, I felt good. In the breast, it just felt amazing. I didn’t think I was going to go that fast.
