AVON LAKE — Avon’s Max Bourque has had a few bumps in the road during his senior season, but he did a nice job smoothing out things Saturday at the Southwestern Conference wrestling tournament.
After losing twice to returning state alternate Kevin Kelly of North Olmsted during the regular season, Bourque scored a third-period pin over the top seed in the semifinals, then avenged another regular-season loss with a first-period pin of Olmsted Falls’ Brady Stang in the 138-pound title match.
“I felt pretty good after that (semifinal) match,” said Bourque, who won the West Shore Conference 120-pound title in 2015. “I was a little surprised (by the pin). It just goes to show that you have to keep working and improving throughout the season.”
Bourque was one of eight area wrestlers who picked up SWC titles. Avon Lake’s Alec Negron won at 120, Avon’s Tommy Sear at 132, North Ridgeville’s Brandon Henderson at 195, Amherst’s Matt Lee at 285 and Midview’s Trever Begin (152), Seth Frambach (182) and Spencer Berthold (220).
