HIGH SCHOOL HOCKEY: AVON WON’T QUIT BUT FALLS TO ST. IGNATIU

By Jon Behm, The Morning Journal

There’s no quit in the Avon Eagles.

St. Ignatius can tell you that firsthand.

Avon may have lost its Brooklyn District sectional final on Feb. 21 at Brooklyn’s John M. Coyne Recreation Center, but the lasting memory will be when senior Zach Zwierecki broke through and scored to keep the Eagles from being blanked.

The goal came with six seconds remaining in the game to make it 9-1.

The Eagles don’t quit.

“We’re never going to give up,” Zwierecki said. “Growing up, I played on a bunch of losing teams. That kind of helped my mentality to never give up and always go until the final buzzer.”

Zwierecki saw some open ice and took advantage of it, putting a shot on St. Ignatius goalie Ben Savarino as he skated on net, then corralled his own rebound and made the arena erupt.

“I just saw the open ice and went down,” Zwierecki said. “I just tried to score. It felt great to get that one, especially against Ignatius.”
