Avon was down, but never out.
Sophomore guard Elizabeth Flynn made sure of that. In a district semifinal vs. Amherst on March 1 at Elyria Catholic, the game was tied at 33-33 with 13 seconds remaining.
That’s when Flynn had the ball at the top, made one step to her left, brought it back over to her right for a couple steps forward for a crossover and sunk a game-winning shot to give the Eagles a 35-33 win.
Avon (10-14) advances to face Olmsted Falls in the district final on March 3.
“I practice that shot every day and I had an opening and just went for it,” Flynn said. “I almost passed it but I’m just so happy right now. I didn’t think it was going in at first, but I’m just so happy.”
Down, 26-23, entering the final quarter, Avon turned things up. Junior Karlee Clements hit a layup to cut the Eagles’ deficit to one.
