Hockey Player of the Year
It’s criminal that Zwierecki wasn’t a first team member of the GCHSHL White North team, particularly when he was unanimously given the nod by Morning Journal-area coaches who opted to give input. That mistake will hopefully be corrected as Zwierecki becomes the 2016-17 Morning Journal hockey player of the year, and in fairly clear-cut fashion. From Game 1 to Game 37, Zwierecki was a difference-maker. He led the Journal area in goals (67) and points (105), ranking second only to teammate Shane Docherty in assists (38). Give me a player who can shoot and pass, but also defend, and I’ll show you the player who set the standard. Speaking of setting standards, that’s exactly what Zwierecki did with his 67-goal season, establishing not only a new Avon record, but a new Lorain County record. He led the Eagles to their second-ever Baron Cup II final, as well as Avon’s only undefeated league season in program history. Add to those facts Zwierecki himself scored as many goals against state champion St. Ignatius as Toeldo St. Francis did in the state final, and it’s easy to see why Zwierecki is the area standard.
