Boys Swimmer of the Year

BEN BROOKS

Avon, senior

There’s nobody quite like Brooks, and that is because his personality outside of the pool matches his skill in it: over the top. It’s that skill that has earned Brooks his second Swimmer of the Year award, after taking The Morning Journal’s top honor last year. Brooks found himself on the state podium twice this year, boasting a silver in the 100 breaststroke (56.28) and a bronze in the 200 IM (1:50.36). It was not the only time Brooks was on a podium, claiming hardware at districts, sectionals, Viking and plenty of other meets throughout the season. However, as impressive as the Eastern Michigan commit was in the pool, it was the way he held himself out of it that cemented his legacy. In a touching moment after Brooks claimed second in the IM, Avon Athletic Director Erich Frombach embraced the senior and told him that the way he represented Avon throughout his career is what any coach or AD could ask for. He was not wrong.
