It wasn’t easy, but Avon downed Berea-Midpark, 7-4, in the Division I Lorain District semifinal May 17 to advance to a district final for the second straight year.
The Eagles took an early 5-0 lead after two innings, and after adding a pair of insurance runs in the fourth, allowed Berea-Midpark to chip away before finally closing the door on the Titans to secure a rematch of last season’s district final against Amherst.
“It never changes at this place,” Avon coach Frank DeSmit said. “Every time you feel like you’re sitting there looking good for playing again, things get a little hairy at the end. That’s high school baseball, unfortunately, but we got through it, we survived.
“I think every time that we’ve played (at the Pipe Yard) and lost it was because of some first or second inning jitters where we ended up giving away some unearned runs, so we put some pressure on (Berea-Mipark) early and that definitely led to a few easy runs there.”
