HIGH SCHOOL BASEBALL: AVON TOPS AMHERST FOR FIRST DISTRICT TITLE IN SCHOOL HISTORY

For the first time in school history, Avon is regional-bound.

The Eagles defeated their Southwestern Conference co-champion Amherst, 2-1, May 18 in the Division I Lorain District final to advance to a Region 3 semifinal.

“It was a little emotional,” Avon coach Frank DeSmit said. “We’ve had a lot of tough games here. We’ve lost them early, we’ve lost them late, so it was a really gutty win for those guys to hang on.”

DeSmit has not-so-affectionately referred to the district tournament as “the Pipe Yard curse” after being eliminated at the Pipe Yard five of his 10 years at Avon, and after being knocked out of the postseason by Amherst the last two years, finally got a bit of revenge on the Comets.
