GIRLS SOCCER: AVON SURVIVES SCARE, DOWNS MAGNIFICAT IN DOUBLE OVERTIME

AVON — With a consistent drizzle coming down and players slipping all over the field, the last thing Avon wanted to do was fall behind early to a team like Magnificat.

But that’s what the Eagles did.

It didn’t matter.

Avon fought its way back and eventually pulled out a 2-1 victory over the Blue Streaks in a two-overtime slugfest in a Division I girls soccer district semifinal.

The game-winning goal came from Abby Delprincipe in the 100th minute as the top-seeded Eagles advanced to the district final against Westlake on Thursday.

“It’s so exciting,” Delprincipe said. “There are so many fans and the energy and vibe was just so pumped up.

It felt like we could run forever. Especially in overtime, and winning the way we did, it was really exciting and we’re pumped up to now play Westlake.”
