Similar to the Avon boys team winning in thrilling fashion over Westlake in double overtime the night before, the girls team kept the mojo going on Oct. 26 at Independence High School. The Eagles topped the Demons, 1-0, in overtime to win the Division I Elyria District title.
It took 91 minutes between the two Southwestern Conference rivals to scratch first blood. Eagles senior Megan Sikora broke free for a goal on top of the box, assisted from Karissa Kraszewski, to ignite Avon’s fans.
This is the second straight district title for Avon (16-0-3). The Eagles advance to a regional semifinal on Oct. 31 to face Strongsville at Brecksville-Broadview Heights at 7 p.m.
“The ball just came up out on top of the box and I touched it around the player and slided it past the goalie,” Sikora said. “Our game plan was to do a lot of possession and get out wide. We wanted to pressure them and hope they kind of panic so we can get through to the goal.
