H.S. SWIMMING: AMHERST BOYS DOMINATE, NEARLY SWEEP SWC MEET; AVON, AVON LAKE GIRLS SHARE LEAGUE TITLE

LAKEWOOD — Neither long, hard training hours, exhaustion nor illness could thwart the destiny of the Amherst boys, Avon Lake girls or Avon girls at the 37th annual Southwestern Conference swimming and diving championships Saturday at Lakewood High School.

The Amherst boys amassed a conference-record 462 points and equaled another conference record by winning 10 of 11 swimming events en route to their third straight title and sixth in eight years. Westlake (218.5) was a distant second.

Avon Lake and Avon shared top honors on the girls side.

The Shoregals held off the Eagles 326-311 Saturday to force a co-championship. Avon defeated Avon Lake 102-84 on Dec. 5 in the conference dual meet, and dual meet records account for 50 percent of the conference championship. Avon Lake and Avon tied with 17 championship points.

Seniors Nathan Moore and Jake Kiska were the main catalysts for the Amherst boys with three wins apiece.
