The jump from middle school to high school wrestling feels like trying to clear the Grand Canyon for many athletes, but it hasn’t been much more than a hop for Avon freshman Cael Saxton.
Saxton, who was a middle school state qualifier last year, stepped onto the mats in December at the Knights of Columbus Invitational for his high school debut and went undefeated en route to the 106-pound championship.
“That was a good tournament for Cael to get his feet wet and see some varsity competition,” Eagles coach Jeremy Johnson said. “His hard work’s been paying off all year-round. He’s getting better week in and week out. He’s just overall a great kid. He’s very coachable — whether it’s in the classroom or it’s on the mat, he’s always striving to be the best.”
