AMHERST — Avon’s girls and Amherst’s boys put the team in team title Friday at the Southwestern Conference Championships on Friday at Amherst High School’s Richard S. Cooley Track.
The Eagles dominated the competition, sweeping the relays and winning three individual gold medals in claiming their second consecutive league crown. They scored 177 points, easily outdistancing second-place Amherst (134).
But while the three individual titles were obviously nice, what won it for the Eagles was the fact that Avon didn’t finish lower than fourth in any event, notching five seconds and four thirds along the way.
“That’s very much what this team does,” Eagles coach Sam Ulery said. “We’re pretty good at the top, but we also have lots and lots of depth. In a meet like this, in a 10-team league, you have to have depth and you have to score in as many events as you can.
