NASCAR legend Dale Earnhardt was once famously quoted as saying, “Second place is just the first loser.”
The Avon Eagles would beg to differ.
A second-place finish at Thursday’s Southwestern Conference Championship Tournament was enough to earn the Eagles their first SWC title.
With sophomore Nolan King leading the way with a 3-over-par 75, the Eagles shot a 322, which left them in second place, six strokes behind Avon Lake (316) in the tournament, which was played on the Legacy Course at Sweetbriar Golf Club.
However, when the results of the SWC Preview, which was won by Avon in August, and regular-season match play results — — both teams went 8-1, were factored in, Avon had a one-point edge over the Shoremen and its first conference title since it won the West Shore Conference in 2014.
