AVON — Avon knew it had a tall task in front of it, defensively, and the Eagles succeeded by keeping Brunswick in front of them.
Brunswick’s offense averaged 4.3 goals per game with three games of 11 or more goals. But Avon managed to keep the Blue Devils off the board in a 1-0 win in the Region 2 semifinals Tuesday night.
“We knew who we had to mark and made sure we stayed touch-tight the whole game,” Avon senior defensive back Catie Geiger said. “We had to be with them the whole time, not let them turn and just be right there with them wherever they are.”
The top priority for Avon was to contain senior forward Jordyn Wickes, a Michigan State commit who set a school record with 30 goals this season. Geiger shouldered the lion’s share of the matchup, but Ela Kisin, Mara Jaracz and Lauren Bernath all rotated onto her at some point.
Bernath did a great job denying what looked like a strong scoring opportunity for Wickes with 7:31 left in the first half. Wickes received the ball in the right corner, turned, but Bernath closed in and forced her to take a tough angle. The shot went wide right.
