Building a passing game takes time.
Avon quarterback Sam DeTillio didn’t have the strongest start to his senior season. However, the latter half of the season propelled him to lead the area with 2,061 passing yards.
“A lot of (the early struggles) wasn’t just on him. It’s timing, the play-calling and his timing with his receivers with a new offensive line. As a team, we were figuring out our identity as well too. So (the responsibility) wasn’t all on Sam (DeTillio),” said Avon coach Mike Elder.
DeTellio will lead the Eagles into their Division II first-round playoff game against visiting Westlake on Oct. 28. He is second in the area with 22 passing touchdowns, only behind North Olmsted’s Xavier Balson. DeTillio stands out with only four interceptions.
“(DeTillio’s) touchdown-to-interception ratio is pretty awesome. He is everything that we thought he would do and more. He has been a great player and a great leader for us,” said Elder.
