The Westshore High School Figure Skating Team coached by Kaelynn Higgins, Avon High School and Team Westshore Alumni (’20), won 3rd overall at the Ohio High School Team Figure Skating State Championships competition at the Thornton Park Ice Arena in Shaker Heights, Ohio over the weekend! Team Westshore also took first place in the Interpretive/Showcase event category. The entire team’s performance of the Muppet Show performance ensemble was a highlight of the weekend. There were 16 high school teams at the competition with over 140 skaters and 25 schools represented from across Ohio.
Team Westshore is a combined high school team consisting of high and middle school with 3 students from Avon: Senior Amy Klimkowski (’23) and Sophomores, Catherine Biesterfeldt (’25) and Danica Voll (’25); 1 student from Avon Lake: Sophomore Jeremy Sapola (’25); 1 student from Bay Village: Junior Madelynn Godenswager (’24);4 students from Rocky River: Seniors Ruby Rauser (’23) and Martha Kolpian (’23), Alannah Holley (’25), Middle Schooler Sora Miyoshi (’29), and 2 students form Saint Joseph Academy: Senior Anastasia Migyanko ‘23 and Lillian Owens (’26).
Skaters earn points for their team by scoring points in their individual events and as a team in maneuvers. For the Eagles, Senior Amy Klimkowski led the point scoring winning 1st place in character performance, 2nd place in both free skate and interpretative, and 3rd place in moves. Sophomore Catherine Biesterfeldt won 1st place in free skate and 3rd place in free dance with a strong showing in both pattern dance and moves. Sophomore Danica Voll delivered powerful performances in her interpretative, pattern dance, and character performance events despite being back on the ice for only 4 weeks following her recovery from a broken leg that required surgery.
