WESTLAKE — Back in the 1970s, near the end of NFL broadcasts would come a historical highlight snippet called “ALCOA Presents Fantastic Finishes.”
With all due respect to the aluminum industrialists, Wednesday night’s Southwestern Conference fantastic finish was right up there with the best, as Westlake won a dramatic 51-49 overtime battle against Avon.
The Westlake version might be more aptly titled “Fantastic Freshmen” as the Demons’ frosh forwards Abby Carrington and Gina Adams delivered when it mattered most.
After Avon roared back in a spirited second half to force overtime, the Eagles held a precarious 49-48 lead with 24.6 seconds left when a foul sent Carrington to the line on a one-and-one. Carrington knocked down both shots to give Westlake the lead. A late rebound and foul sent her back with 1.7 left to split another one-and-one and seal the game.
“Abby Carrington stepped to the line and she could have been intimidated or nervous to death. But whatever way you want to put it, she did what she needed to do at that moment and that’s a great thing for a freshman,” Westlake coach Art Daniels said. “She was guarding their big, rebounding the basketball, posting up and had a nice pass down on the baseline for an easy basket late in the fourth quarter, too.”
