A lot of games in Northeast Ohio were postponed because of rain, but Avon, playing on its home turf at Strenger Stadium, was glad it got its game in on March 30.
The Eagles continued their impressive start to the season in a dominant 9-0 win over Southwestern Conference foe North Olmsted. There was a half-hour lightning delay after the top of the first, but the Eagles were never bothered.
Starter Shane Docherty pitched 4 1/3 innings, giving up one hit and three walks, while senior pitcher Matt Kelly held the fort down the rest of the way. Senior infielder Tommy Kocar had a hit along with two RBI.
Avon improved to 3-0 overall and 2-0 in the conference.
“We got key hits when it mattered,” Kocar said. “We make sure to never leave guys on base and not make errors. We just try to hit strikes and we don’t swing at bad pitches. All of us are really good friends and always cheering each other on. We always know where to be, what the other one’s going to do.”
