At the 20th annual Avon Lake Invitational on April 1, the day saw several area athletes step up despite rough running conditions. Strongsville took home the girls (159) and boys (161) titles, while the Avon boys (106) were second and girls (101.5) finished third.
Avon senior Sam Gerak, a Northwestern football commit and state qualifier in the shot put, won the Avon Lake shot put title with a 54-2 1/2. In the discus, Gerak finished as a runner-up (138-09) to Rocky River’s Michael Shoaf (157-05), and teammate Nick Rennette took third in both the discus (136-11) and shot put (46-08 1/4).
“I still got to get better, but God is good,” Gerak said. “Nick Rennette and I both had pretty good days. We mess with each other a lot and tell each other how much we suck. But we support each other a lot. My disc is coming along and it’s a lot better than it was last year. I want to hit 56-57 feet for shot this year and for disc I want 150 feet. I came in fourth in state for indoor in the shot put and it was a good experience.”
Avon’s Mitch Cooper won the high jump (5-9), and on the girls side, Clare Robertson won the 3,200 with a 11:46.67. Robertson was a state qualifier in cross country last season.
