Avon coach Julie Bendzuck knows her team has experience to lean on this season, moreso than in years past. That experience showed in a 3-0 sweep over Southwestern Conference foe Avon Lake at home on Aug. 24. The Eagles improved to 2-0.
Avon kept Avon Lake at bay, winning the sets, 25-22, 25-18 and 25-15,
“We had a really respectful opponent on the other side of the net,” Bendzuck said. “They have some great hitters and defense. So you have to expect that, especially in our conference. In the second and third sets, we worked really hard in our passing and were able to separate.”
The Eagles lineup is filled with juniors and seniors — and because of that, gives them the ability to finish games strong. The first set provided a lot of back-and-forth action, and Avon held leads of 13-9 and 19-16. Up, 21-18, junior Gillian Romanchok provided a key kill, and later senior Emma Abfall put the stamp on the match point with a kill.
