Tiffin>> The Tiffin Carnival at Hedges-Boyer Park is one of the largest cross country meets in the nation, and it’s a great way to test the waters for teams and individuals to see how they stack up against some of the state’s best.
The Avon and Brookside girls and Bay boys found out a lot about themselves.
The Eagles finished as a runner-up in the Division I-A race with 114 points, five points behind champion Medina Highland (109).
Avon was led as usual by junior Jules Frombach placing 10th (19:28.8) and senior Claudia Hermann finishing right behind her with a PR (19:33.4). Hermann’s previous PR was a 19:52 and Coach Matt Nortz added she “ran out of her shoes today.”
“Jules and I have been getting in good workouts, and that’s been helping,” Hermann said. “The course was pretty smooth today, and I didn’t have any trouble. I definitely have more confidence after this race, and it feels really good to get second place as well.”
The Avon boys weren’t too shabby, either, placing 17th overall, led by senior Jack Reed clocking in at 15:52.5, which currently stands as the fastest time in the Morning Journal coverage area among boys.
Nortz, in his sixth year, said it was a great day for both sides.
