For the third time this season the Avon Eagles defeated conference foe Amherst, this time in a Division I sectional final matchup at Midview High School on Oct. 19
Unlike the first two meetings that Avon won in straight sets, the Eagles had to fight for a victory as a motivated Comets team and went toe to toe with the four-time defending Southwestern Conference champions.
“That’s a really good team,” Avon coach Julie Bendzuck said. “It’s hard to beat somebody three times, and we knew that going into this. I had a feeling it was going to be pretty tough and intense, but I think what I’m most proud of is how we responded in the fourth set.”
After taking the first two sets 25-19 and 25-16 the Comets took the third set 25-15 thanks to freshman Nia Hall who had one of her team-leading 11 kills on the final point of the set. The Amherst third set victory set up a crucial fourth set that neither team wanted to lose.
