Westlake head coach Karen Swanson Haan knew a game like this was coming for Katie Whitesell after a strong week in practice.
The sophomore proved her right scoring a season high 16 points in a 65-52 Southwestern conference win over Avon.
“Katie was just phenomenal today,” Swanson Haan said. “She had a good couple of practices, and so I knew coming into this game that she was kind of primed and ready. And man she just cut hard and rebounded hard, she kind of had that extra bounce in her step and it really showed.”
Cutting is something every Westlake player did well, as perimeter passers were constantly able to find teammates on backdoor cuts helping establish a 13-point halftime lead. Whitesell had 11 of her 14 in the first half, including a seven point first quarter.
Something she attributes to her coaches pushing her to be more assertive in practice.
“My coaches have been egging me on to drive to the basket more,” she said. “So today I think I did a really good job at that. I worked on backdoor cuts and moving around and staying moving.”
