Avon’s Amanda Socha made the podium but was far from satisfied with an eighth-place finish Thursday at the Division I state tournament at CT Branin Natatorium in Canton.

A pair of bad dives in the second and 10th rounds of the 11-dive competition prevented Socha from placing as high as second or third. She scored 374.0 points, but was only 14.05 points out of third place and 24.65 points out of second.

“It went well, but it probably wasn’t my best meet,” said Socha, a three-time state qualifier. “My 10th-round dive, my reverse 1½ (2.1 degree of difficulty), didn’t score well (fours across the board from seven judges). I flipped too much.”

Socha was in fifth place heading into the finals, with three dives left.

“I did most of them (the 11-dive total) fine, but, overall my dives were not my best,” said Socha, the No. 8 seed. “My warmups went well and my first dive of the competition went well.”
