Avon’s Niko Pappas wins the 2020 Golden Helmet Award

AVON — The Avon coaches made it clear that the odds were stacked against senior Niko Pappas becoming a successful quarterback.

Pappas began playing the position later in his career, then was given virtually no game experience to improve before being handed the starting spot last preseason.

But Pappas found ways to steadily improve his skills over the last four years and produced a final high school season that earned him the 2020 Golden Helmet Award, given to the top senior football player in Lorain County. The award was presented to Pappas before the Eagles’ basketball season opener Tuesday night.
