High school track and field Comet Relays: Avon gets full team effort on team title at 65th Comet Relays

The Avon Eagles boys track team got strong performances from up and down its line up and the formula resulted in a team title at the 65th Annual Amherst Comet Relays.

Avon totaled 75 points and edged out Youngstown Boardman (70) for the title. Solon (66) finished third in the 26-team field.

Host Amherst (16) finished tied for 18th with Sylvania Northview while Westlake (14) finished 20th and Olmted Falls finished 26th.

The Avon 4 x 800 team of Nathan Ferguson, Ryan Hammerschidt, Jett Weiber and Cole Emerine had the signature performance of the meet for the Eagles as the won their race in school-record time of 8:00.53 besting second-place finishers Mentor by almost 19 seconds. That same team took home a third-place finish in the distance medley with a time of 10:57.05.

Sophomore Hunter Maxey cleared 14-06 in pole vault to finish second in that event while junior Colin Coffman finished second in the 100 meters with a time of 11.04 just a shade behind winner Carlton Landingham (10.84) of St. Edward.

Eagle junior Ryan Ptacek finished third in the long jump with a jump of 20-07 1/2 while Avon junior Evan Shakel finished second in the discus with a throw of 149-06 and third in the shot put (51-01 ½).

Avon Coach Scott Lanham said he was pleased with team’s effort.

“Pretty impressive (effort) by the guys. In the field events they did very well; the sprint crew, the distance crew, just all-around team effort.”
