The current crop of Avon golfers have been winning tournaments for years. This year they have their focus set on making it to the biggest one of all — the state tournament.
“When I was a freshman we were pretty good players but we were still inexperienced,” said senior Jack Gerborg, a four-year varsity golfer and the reigning Southwestern Conference MVP
“We knew we could be good if we put in the time and the practice. I don’t think we’ve achieved our full potential yet. We’ve done good in the conference the past two years but we haven’t qualified for state yet. That’s our goal, to make districts and hopefully golf well enough there to make it to state.”
Gerborg, fellow seniors Nolan King and Tyler Christy and junior Brenton Dill were members of Avon’s back-to-back SWC championship teams in 2019 and ’20 as well as the Eagles’ district-qualifying team last season.
This season Avon started the year by winning three of its first four 18-hole tournaments — the Amherst Comet Invitational, the Keystone Grey Hawk Invitational and the SWC Preview. Unlike the past two years when the Eagles seemingly tailed off at the end of the season, this year their goal is keep the winning going all the way until October.
