AVON LAKE - Avon battled through close games the past two weeks while Avon Lake blew out its opponents.

The dominating non-conference performance may have cost the Shoremen in their Southwestern Conference opener.

The Eagles scored the final three touchdowns and pulled away for a 42-21 victory Friday night.

"I think we were better prepared coming into this," said Avon quarterback Sam DeTillio, who threw for a pair of touchdowns and ran for two more. "Our first three games, we scheduled hard teams. So our games have been down to the wire in Weeks 2 and 3 since our Week 1 got canceled. We've had insanely close games, and I think that's why we were better prepared and in better shape. They're out here cramping when we were still ready to go."

Both teams were ready to go from the start.

Avon (3-1, 1-0 SWC) got on the scoreboard first when DeTillio threw a pass down the middle to a wide-open Cam Santee for a 30-yard score in the first quarter - the second touchdown connection between the two in as many weeks.

"We have a lot of chemistry, Cam's one of my best friends," DeTillio said. "I think that shows out here on the field. We can make big plays in the big games."
