Last year, Avon was known as the inexperienced team after an influx of young but talented players on the come-up.

Fast-forward to the 2023 Southwestern Conference opener at Elyria on Aug. 22, and the Eagles' investment is paying off, as they got the better of the Pioneers in three sets.

"We definitely have a lot of excitement coming into this season. We've had a really great preseason; great summer," Avon coach Kara Coffman said. "Obviously, we wanted to come out strong in our conference opener. We didn't want to take it easy on anyone, and we want them to let it know that we're coming for that first-place conference title."

Avon won its sets, 25-12, 25-9, 25-14, to improve 1-0 in the SWC. The Eagles started their season 2-0, which also included a sweep over Northview (2022 district champion).

The Eagles' 6-2 system ran like a well-oiled machine for most of the match, which allowed setters Kamryn Danielson and Lily Hamilton to dive deep into their depth of hitters.

"I think tonight really showed our depth," Coffman said. "Everybody came off the bench ready to pla,y and everybody picked up the speed of the game. With that chemistry, all 15 girls had that chemistry to show a lot of depth on the team."
