After a week since Avon's last game, the Eagles needed a spark in their slow start against Elyria on Dec. 14.

Once Avon settled in, it turned hustle plays into points as the Eagles defeated the Pioneers, 69-36, on the road.

"I think in the first quarter, we came out really flat," said Avon senior point guard Brooke Laube. "We didn't play (last) Saturday and going a full week (without a game) is a little tough for us along with having nine girls at practice this week. Once we got together, we are fine."

Avon led Elyria, 6-2, for about the first half of the quarter. After Elyria sank a free throw to make it 8-3 in the second quarter, the Eagles went on a 9-0 run to get the ball rolling.

"Credit to Elyria, they did a nice job (defensively). We kind of had a disjointed week of practice," Avon coach Maddie Ferrando said. "We had kids hurt and sick. We were kind of disjointed all week. It kind of summed up our week in the first quarter. We pulled through and broke out of that slump for the first quarter."

Avon used its grit to earn extra possessions from steals, getting loose balls and rebounds.
